Win $100,000 for Saving Money February 13, 2009

Someone has finally got it, they’re finally thinking outside the box. People spend countless amounts of money on lottery tickets and slot machines while emptying their savings in hopes that the next one will be the BIG one. If you live in Michigan you may want to keep reading.

Michigan credit unions have created a rewards program that rewards you for saving instead of spending. Simple enough concept right, just wait, it gets better. The Save to Win” program allows individuals who open accounts in one of the eight participating credit unions, to receive a chance at winning a $100,000 grand prize. Account holders get one entry for every $25 that they save. Don’t worry, the 100 grand isn’t the only prize you’d be vying for, in addition to the grand prize each credit union will award smaller monthly prizes. If you don’t win a prize, don’t worry, because your greatest reward will be a savings account with a balance in the black. Check out michigansavingsraffle.org for rules and a list of participating credit unions.

Happy Saving!

Make Money From Referrals February 6, 2009

If you could (excuse the expression) sell ice to an Eskimo than this post might be for you. With unemployment skyrocketing, many are looking for ways to supplement their income. Since its easier to do what you know, why not take your talents to a new level and make a little money while connecting suppliers to all the right buyers. Referral fees are pretty common practice in business, (I should know, I made $100 in referrals last weekend) but they haven’t been used much online because there was no way to track them. Websites like Salesconx and uRefer not only provide a way to track referrals, but pay out some pretty good cash in the process. On these sites, vendors set the referral fees they’re willing to pay and what they are paying for, and once the transaction is completed you get paid. Visit Salesconx.com and uRefer.com for more information.

Goob even writes a quick blurb on everything he posts. Check out Hey It’s Free.net and load up on some free stuff. Oh and by the way, he’s even giving away $50 Walmart giftcards.

I am a Biggest Loser fan and each season I am motivated to loose weight, but I’ll be honest, the excitement tends to fizzle by the 3rd weeks episode and by then I’ve fallen off the wagon. My Mac Is Back!! January 22, 2009

Hi all, I’m back.  The Mac is back and running like new. I hope I haven’t lost the few readers that I have. For those of you who have waited patiently, Thank you.  This weekend has been the perfect weekend to get back to work and if you’re in Michigan or anywhere on the east coast, you’re probably still digging your way out of the front door. It hasn’t snowed in a few days, but the residual has not been easy. Got stuck twice yesterday.

I found it incredibly strange that the desktop, my notebook and my husbands’ notebook all decided to poop out at the same time. But I will agree that the time spent unplugged was incredibly refreshing. I found I had a lot more me time than I thought and I plan to unplug for a complete day once a week and for at least an hour each day.  That means no computers, phones, TV, Ipods, etc. We’ll see how the household adjusts. I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Now let’s get down to business. Each year we all drink our champagne and make our resolutions, like loosing weight or getting organized and drop them a week later.  This year its more important than ever to get organized and get your finances and personal paperwork in order and handling your health benefits are just as important. Unfortunately your health benefits can read like Danish stereo instructions and can be very confusing. The FOR DUMMIES folks have taken these things into consideration and are offering a free copy of Navigating Your Health Benefits For Dummies at www.planforyourhealth.com.

Mom 2 Mom Sales October 7, 2008

A giant black garbage bag full of my kid’s old clothes sat in my hallway for two months, after winter cleaning. It patiently waited for the day I would take it to the goodwill. It never got there. I don’t know about you, but my back to school shopping budget was VERY limited. My children are growing like weeds and I did not want to invest in a pair of $20 jeans for a 3 yr old that would grow out of them in 3 months. I sure I’m not alone in this. I had to get creative and selling blood was only going to get me so much. ( -;

I intended to have a garage sale but my apt. complex doesn’t allow them, so I decided to try my luck at a Mom to Mom Sale. For those of you who don’t know a mom-to-mom sale is an event held by mom groups, churches and schools, where moms get together and sell gently used clothing, shoes, toys, baby gear and many other items. It’s similar to a big garage sale or thrift store.

You will not believe some of the stuff people get rid of. I’ve seen everything from Dior baby pajamas for $5 to brand new unopened Tupperware sets. Of course all sales are different, but with patience you can come across some really good finds. I sold most of the kids old clothes and was able to do most of my shopping there, as well. Any clothes I didn’t sale was donated to the church that hosted the sale. I added enough money to my back to school budget to get everything he kids needed as well as a few pieces for mom.

If you live in Michigan check out www.mom2momlist.com for sales in your area. For those outside of Michigan, contact your local schools, mom groups and churches for information regarding similar sales. You can also check out some of the on-line resale shops listed at mom2momlist.com or just try your local Goodwill, Salvation Army and vintage shops for great deals.

Happy Shopping

Spam supports my habit. October 13, 2008

I like to shop, no I LOVE to shop. Unfortunately, a pink slip can quickly put a stop to any recreational spending.  Money has to be reallocated and spent on more important expenses; leaving very little for things like travel, eating out and new clothes. This was very much the case in my situation. A year after my 2nd child was born I found myself drowning in the maternity clothes that I still wore and in dire need of a new wardrobe. An email led me to the answer. Spam from any other sender is just spam, unless the sender is MyPoints.com. This website turns spam into money. I’ve tried several rewards programs and MyPoints.com has given me the best returns on my points.

It’s really easy, you earn points for doing what you probably already do online: shopping, reading emails, playing games, searching the web and taking surveys. You get about 5 points just for reading emails and the point value increases as you do more. You can redeem your points for gas cards, airline miles, hotel discounts and almost 100 different stores and restaurants. The only downside is waiting for the gift card to arrive in the mail. By the way, be sure to get a junk email address or set up a filter in your personal email, because you’ll be getting a lot of mail.

Who knew your email could pay for your retail therapy.

Bad habits can be hard to break. October 9, 2008

Once again the markets have taken a dump and investors are getting scared. This shows that few have faith in the recent bailout. Do we listen to the “experts” and stay calm or do we continue to watch the news interrupt our viewing pleasure to inform us of another drop in the market. Many are being forced out of their comfort zones and into the unfamiliar territory of cutting back. With today’s uncertain economy and the kung fu grip the banks have on credit, some families have had to make major lifestyle changes. I know I have.

Old habits like mid morning Starbucks runs and late afternoon Victoria Secret Semi-Annual Sale raids during lunch, (guilty of both) will need to be replaced with coupon clipping and unplugging appliances, (guilty again). For many, easier said than done, while others may be wondering what all the complaining is all about. The bottom line is people need to make changes and take responsibility for their finances.

So, how can it be done? A little patience, time, research and organization. The Heinz family featured on Oprah yesterday have turned coupon clipping, carpooling, brown bag lunches and DIY projects into $70,000 in savings.

Here are a few resources to get you started:

  • Websites like MSN Money Central, Kiplinger, Geezeo, Mint and many banking/credit websites offer free templates, calculators and budget planning tools to assist in creating and maintaining a budget.
  • Coupon clipping gets easier with websites like Coupons.com, CoolSavings.com, and CouponMom by allowing subscribers to print coupons from their computer. Major store chains such as Meijer, Kroger and CVS allow you to  view store ads and print coupons.
  • Save some dough with a FDIC insured high yield savings account. Check out FNBO at 3.50%, ShoreBank at 3.50%, E*Trade at 3.30% and HSBC at 3.25%.
  • The DIY Network has almost every possible do it yourself project that you can think of.

Designer fashion without the designer price. October 17, 2008

Be honest: how many times have you rewound a dvd just to get a second look at the shoes or dress a character wore? Fashionable movies like SATC and The Devil Wears Prada have one character that have the ability to captivate us without saying a word; the fashion. Unfortunately, all of that beauty comes at a price, and it’s usually a price I can’t afford. Patricia Field, award winning costume designer for Sex and the City, brings that flawless style from the screen to your closet.

Women all over were in search of the infamous blue angel dress that Carrie wore in the SATC movie. Last month, fashionistas everywhere got their chance to dawn the fashions of Carrie, Amanda, Charlotte and Miranda with Patricia Fields new HSN line Destination Style New York.

The line is comprised of 20 complete looks and 60 individual pieces that completely invoke the ladies of SATC.  Whether you’re feeling like a little Carrie or a bit more Amanda-esque today, no problem. HSN will have the look you’re looking for at the price you can afford. The average price is only $75! Can you believe it?  The best part–get this–the pieces come in sizes 2-16. So for some of you ladies with a few extra curves, you can still indulge you inner fashionista with a little SATC style.

Outsmart your pockets with SmartyPig. October 16, 2008

For many, saving money is much like losing weight, for every buck saved, five is spent. Your savings, somehow constantly finding its way to the hole in your pocket, making the goal of saving for those new metallic lizard open toe Manolo sandals with rhinestone buckle at ankle strap virtually impossible. Ooooh Preeettyyy!

West Bank of Iowa has provided a solution to this common problem with SmartyPig.com. This website allows you to set up savings accounts with a specific goal attached. What makes this online banking system different from others is that SmartyPig allows you to make these accounts “public” so that you and others can track your progress towards your established goal. The accounts are FDIC secure and offer a 3.90% interest rate.

When you’ve reached a savings goal, SmartyPig issues you a MasterCard debit card that contains the full balance of your account to spend where you please. To get even more for your money SmartyPig partnered with major retailers to give you a bonus. You will have the option to select a retail store card , which would give you the total savings plus an added incentive of up to 5% of your savings plus interest. In other words, if your savings goal is for a $300 Graco stroller from Amazon, you have the option of getting a Amazon gift card (once you’ve reached your $300 goal) for the $300 plus the added incentives which would raise the total to about $315.

I suggest that you don’t use this as a banking solution for emergency funds and down payments. The site is for those primarily saving for consumer items. The social aspect works best for those who need a support system to reach heir goals. SmartyPig makes you take responsibility and helps you build better financial habits.

Tonight was the last debate and both candidates have pleaded their case. It is now up to us to make up our minds and choose the next President. But, before you go to the polls, take the time to visit Obama’s and McCain’s websites as well as FactCheck.org to make an informed decision. Age, race and sex are definite factors in this historic presidential race, but should definitely not be deciding factors in your decision. The candidates proposed policies and standings on the issues most important to you should determine your choice for President.

The informed voter should be the only voter.

Dirty Tricks – Double Duty Cleaning October 18, 2008

Everyone wants a fresh, clean smelling home, unfortunately dirty diapers, last nights dinner and piles of laundry can take over. It can be oh so tempting to buy all the sweet smelling and daintily packaged cleansers, air fresheners and candles, but the budget conscious know it’s not necessary to invest in expensive products in order to keep your home clean and smelling fresh. You can clean almost anything with a few household items that you probably already have on hand.Today’s double duty item is Baking Soda.

  • Instead of buying scented carpet deodorizer, try baking soda. Sprinkle some onto your carpet about 15-30 minutes before you vacuum.
  • If you have black heel marks on your vinyl flooring, try sprinkling a little baking soda on the marks and wipe with a damp sponge.
  • Pour a cup of baking soda down any drain and follow with a few cups of boiling water to keep drains running well and smelling good.
  • Add a half cup of baking soda in the rinse cycle to freshen laundry.
  • Out of toothpaste, pour a little baking soda in your palm and dip a damp toothbrush into it to clean teeth. To freshen breath add one teaspoon in half a glass of water, swish, spit and rinse.
  • Uh-oh, out of deodorant? Dust a little baking soda under your arms to neutralize odor.
  • Use baking soda in the same manner as any other powdered cleanser to clean your tubs, shower curtains, tiles and sinks.
  • Pet odors like to linger. Sprinkle some baking soda on the area, wait 15 minutes and vacuum up.
  • Clean and deodorize baby toys safely and effectively using 4 tablespoons of baking soda dissolved in 1 quart of warm water. Wash toys with a clean damp sponge or cloth, rinse and dry.
  • Freshen stuffed animal by sprinkling baking soda on them, let them set for 15 minutes and brush off.

For tons more double duty uses for baking soda, check out ARM & HAMMER.com.

Who needs cable! November 18, 2008

One of the things that I had to give up to save money was cable. If it weren’t for my children, my library card and my HD TV – which gives me at least one extra channel attached to each regular channel – I would have died of boredom during my first lay-off. It was about a month in (without cable) that I found Hulu.com – a website that brings you free TV clips, shows and movies from popular networks and studios. There’s no accounts to be set up or downloading of streams to view some of your favorite shows. You will have some commercial interruptions, but most are limited and they have a pretty good array of shows to choose from. You can see clips and entire episodes from shows like Heroes, Project Runway, SNL, The Office, Real Housewives and Lipstick Jungle.

I have calendars all over the place. I just noticed that during my pre-winter cleanup. I get all of my dates organized in a calendar and it somehow gets misplaced. Unfortunately my “baby brain” never recovered. Who knows what I’d get done if I didn’t write stuff down.

For all of those out there like me whom could use a little help keeping their family on schedule, I have the perfect website for you, and it’s free.  Cozi.com is a free web service that helps you manage crazy schedules, track shopping and to-do lists, organize household chores, stay in communication and share memories—all in one place. The site is easy to use, completely customizable and is accessible from any computer or mobile phone with internet access. It has been a lifesaver. I love the mobile access feature, it allows you to get your day’s schedule, grocery list, or to-do’s from your cell phone.

The site is focused on families, but anyone with a crazy schedule that needs to be organized can put this service to good use.

Today Oprah featured the Kindle as one of her favorite things. For all who don’t know, the Kindle is a portable wireless reading device with instant access to more than 190,000 books, blogs, newspapers and magazines. Whether you’re in bed or on the train, Kindle lets you download a book and get it in less than a minute.

I have to admit I have wanted one of these things since it graced the front page of Amazon.com, but I can’t afford the $359 price tag. I’m slowly getting there with my SmartyPig account. For those of you who can afford it, Oprah teamed up with Amazon and they are offering a special offer for Oprah Show viewers, Amazon.com is giving $50 off the price of Kindle. Enter the promotional code OPRAHWINFREY during the checkout process at Amazon.com to receive the discount. This offer is valid through November 1, 2008. You can also receive an additional 10 percent off the price of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle (regularly $9.99 Kindle/$17.63 hardcover). There is no promotional code is necessary for this offer.

Until I reach my $400 goal I have settle for a more affordable option like book swaps & ebook download sites. Websites like Manybooks and Word Public Library allow users to download ebooks to you computer, PDA or iPod. Paperback Swap, Frugal Reader and Titletrader allow you to swap books with others. My favorite bookswap site is Swap Tree. You can swap books, music, movies and games for free. All you have to do is list the stuff you want to trade, let SwapTree find traders, you choose what you want to receive in trade and mail the swap. Make sure to use the Media Mail service at the Post Office, which should make your out of pocket cost no more than $2.50. You save money and you’re recycling which is good for the environment. What else could you ask for?

You can exchange books, music, movies, houses and even spouses, but what do you do when you get a gift card from a store that you don’t particularly care for? You could let it collect dust in your junk drawer while wishing the giver had given you cash or you could trade it in for cash, another gift card or even pay bills.

Gift Card Rescue will allow you to exchange or swap your gift card for another card, sell your gift card for cash, or buy discounted gift cards with free shipping. They typically purchase cards at 60%-80% of their value and payment are disbursed via PayPal.

SwapaGift allows you to buy, sell, swap or exchange gift cards, use gift cards to pay bills or donate to a cause. It costs $1.99 to list a card for swap or sale, plus the cost of shipping it.

Plastic Jungle let’s you buy, sell and trade gift cards. They charge a 10% transaction fee when gift cards are sold or traded and you have to pay to ship the card. All of the cards are sold and traded through the web site to prevent fraud. Gift cards sold for cash must have a minimum $25 value.

There are a lot of sites out there, each with their own set of rules and fees, so be sure to read the requirements before participating in an exchange or sale to insure that you get the best value for your trade.

How many times have you waited to use or misplaced a gift card only to find out that when you were ready to use it , it had expired or only had half of the balance available? This has been a headache for many and they’re not taking it any more. California, Washington and Massachusetts are a few of the states that have passed laws banning fees and expiration dates on gift cards. Michigan has joined the band wagon by passing a law that prohibits stores from:

  • not accepting a gift certificate or gift card for at least five years since the date of purchase. All requirements only apply to cards
  • charging an inactivity fee or other service fee for the possession or use of a gift certificate/card.
  • altering the terms of conditions of a gift certificate/card after it has been issued.
  • failing to disclose the terms and conditions of a gift certificate/card.

The law takes effect November 1 of 2008 and only includes cards bought after November 1, not existing cards.

Vinegar: It’s not just for dressing salads. October 29, 2008

Did you have that mom or grandmother that wouldn’t waste anything. I mean the type that would use that last gross mushy banana to make bread or use a old sock as a dust mop. If you did I’m sure she knew that there were many uses for vinegar, but did she know there were at least 20? Mary Ellen Pinkham, a contributor for iVillage.com did. I ran across this article while researching a way to keep my moms new kittens from destroying her plant and was surprisingly amazed. Check it out. Here are a few I’ve tried:

  • Prevent a cat from digging in plants. Add some vinegar to the misting water. – This one saved my Mom’s prized wondering jew plant.
  • Soften a hard paint brush. Boil it in vinegar, or soak it in very hot vinegar, then wash in soapy water. – Saved me a very expensive trip to Michael’s. I have a small addiction.
  • Remove soapy gunk around faucets. Soak a paper towel in white vinegar, squeeze it out, wrap it around the chrome for 10 minutes, then wipe dry. – Saved me a tisk, tisk and wagging finger from my mother-in-law.
  • Repel ants. Wash counters with vinegar. – This and the next saved me $5, didn’t have to buy bug spray.
  • Keep fruit flies away. Pour 1/2 inch of cider vinegar in the bottom of a small jar and punch a dozen or so holes in the lid (using an ice pick). The vinegar attracts the flies through the holes and they can’t get out. Or just set out a small dish with the vinegar plus a few drops of dish detergent; it attracts, then drowns them.

You can read the entire article at iVillage.com.You’d be surprised at the money and time you’d save.

7000 job cuts at American Express, 1825 factory jobs cut at Chrysler and more each day. Millions of people are losing their jobs or cutting back and need added income. May I suggest a at-home Call Service Representative. That’s right, I said at home. I know better than anyone that most work from home opportunities are scams, but I’m usually willing to give them a try as long as they don’t ask for any money up front.

There are many call center services out there that will pay you to answer incoming phone calls for anything from catalog orders to coordinating concierge requests. Many of the companies offer really flexible hours. You could work as little as 15 minutes a day to full time hours weekly. If you have basic computer knowledge, good sales, verbal and customer service skills and like to help people – oh – and of course love to talk on the phone, this could be for you. You will be required to have a computer, usually a desktop rather than laptop for security reasons, a lan line phone and cable or DSL internet access. The pay range is anywhere from $7 to $20 and hour, depending on experience. These are considered contractor positions and don’t include any benefits, such as vacation pay, health insurance or overtime.

Here are a few companies that are looking for home operators.

Voting Myths – Don’t get turned away at the polls. November 3, 2008

No matter who you plan to cast your vote for tomorrow, this is a history making election. As problems arise for early voters you need to be prepared and ready for anything. People are being turned away and denied their right to vote because they are not informed. Well, I hope this helps.

Where is my polling location?

  • Google has a polling location finder on Google Maps
  • Visit Go Vote.org or text pp with your address, and zip code, to 69866 or click SMS reminder on a map to send info to your phone
  • You can call your county clerk’s office, Secretary of State office or Board of Elections
  • Visit Vote 411.org

What do I bring with me to the polls?

Photo ID like a drivers license or state ID or you can visit Can I Vote.org for info on the laws in each state.

What else should I know?

  • The lines will be long. Be prepared. Just a suggestion – bring snacks.
  • Depending on where you live you could be turned away for wearing a Obama or McCain Tee, pin, button or hat. This is different in each state, but if you live in Michigan, it’s a No-No. Don’t give up your right to vote, leave the campaign gear at home.
  • You can vote if you’ve been arrested or convicted of a crime as long as you are not on probation or parole for a felony or currently in serving time.
  • You can still vote if you have warrants, unpaid parking tickets, owe child support or alimony or are on a state assistance program. You will NOT be arrested.
  • You can vote if you home is being foreclosed. Be sure to vote in the precinct of your current address.
  • You can not vote over the phone.
  • You can vote on November 4th only. Don’t fall for it if you’re told you voting date has been rescheduled for another day.
  • You can vote in the state where you attend school.
  • Absentee ballots do count as a regular vote in every state.
  • You can vote if your drivers license address does not match your current address. The photo ID is used to only verify your id. Make sure that you vote in the precinct of your current address. Check out Google, Go Vote.org or Vote 411.org for your polling location.
  • You can still vote if you are in line at the time that the polls close.
  • EVERY VOTE COUNTS – GET OUT AND VOTE!!!!

You’ve done the work, you’re registered (if you’re not sure go to Can I Vote.org), you have studied each candidate thoroughly (check out Barack Obama.com, John McCain.com, Fact Check.org, Vote Smart.org and The Ballot.org to research the candidates) and you’ve made your decision and are now informed and ready to vote. Make sure you do your part in this historic 2008 election, get up, get out and go vote.

If anyone tries to threaten you, tells you something you feel isn’t true or try to deter you from voting in any way call the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) at 1-877-523-2792 or call the Election Protection hot-line at 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683).

Saying “I Voted” will get you freebies. November 3, 2008

Check out the places that will reward you for exercising your constitutional right.

  • Ben & Jerry’s is offering a free scoop of ice cream from 5-8 pm.
  • Krispy Kreme will give you a free “Patriotic” donut if you have an “I Voted” sticker.
  • Starbucks offers up a free small coffee if you tell them you voted.

Go Vote, Change the World and enjoy some free goodies.

I got out there and cast my vote, if you did, Congrats – we’re about to change the world! If you haven’t – get out there and take advantage of your constitutional right. You can stand in line to do something that people had to fight and die for. Get out there and stand for your rights, get out there and VOTE!! You have everything to lose.

It’s gettin’ cold out there ladies and you’ll probably need to add a few cold weather pieces to your wardrobe. So check out Francesca’s Collection website, spend $75 or more and receive a free black scarf. The offer ends 11/13/08, valid only while supplies last and not available in stores.

Thin Is In – The New Wave Notebook November 8, 2008

The ultra thin, ultra light notebooks are making a splash in the tech world. The Acer Aspire One and the Asus EeePC are two to watch for. These advanced word processors are great for mobile computing, IM and handling simple documents. Which means don’t expect these to work like a desktop or higher end notebook. They can’t handle the more popular, heavier applications like Photoshop, CAD, Adobe Suites or even an extensive iTunes library. Now, if you’re looking for a fashionable light weight notebooks for surfing the web and doing light paperwork while on the go these are for you.

Here are a few pros and cons:

PROSthin-notebooks

  • Prices as low as $400
  • Lightweight – most just under 3lbs
  • Many fashionable colors and designs to choose from
  • Size: some have screens ranging between 7 to 10 inches. Smaller than a piece of paper and a perfect fit into that vintage Kenzo Tote that you rented from Avelle.
  • Battery life is up to eight hours depending on model
  • Standard features: built in wireless, webcam, Windows XP Home, built in speakers, multiple USB and card readers, full QWERTY keyboard and touchpad
  • External video output
  • Lots of free downloads

CONS

  • Does not come with built in CD or DVD drive
  • Can not upgrade the operating system
  • Can not handle large applications and strenuous multitasking
  • Smaller keyboard area
  • May get a little warm after extended use

The pros and cons are for either the Acer or Asus or both, I did not specify. Check out the website for exact specifications.

Overall these are affordable computers, perfect for everyone from the first time user to the on-the-go professional. So if you’re that person that’s looking for something as light as your smart-phone but with more features than these could be for you.

I love a good movie. I hate how it costs $50 bucks for two people to enjoy a good movie nowadays. Well this is my solution to that problem. Free Advance Screenings – not only are you one of a select few that have the privilege to see the movie before everyone else, but it’s FREE too.

Film Metro is a website site that provide information and free movie tickets to advance screenings. What’s an advance screening? It is a promotion used for research and get publicity for a movie before a it is released to the movie theaters/general public.

Here’s how it works: you sign up for a free account, browse the movie screenings, choose an available screening in you area, download the ticket, enjoy the movie and post your comments. The site does allow you to invite a friend, so you don’t have to go it alone, if you choose. So, check out a free flick and save that $50 for something more important – like gas.

Smart Shopping Toolbar Save You Money November 16, 2008

There’s nothing like saving a little money, especially in today’s economy. How many times have you purchased something and later found it at a cheaper price at the store down the road? With all of the sales and coupon sites on the internet it can be hard to find the best deals. At any given time you could find yourself spending more out of pure exhaustion from sale overload.

ShopAtHome Banner

Shop At Home.com is a website that can not only get you the best deals but alert you when you favorite things are on sale with a smart toolbar. What’s a smart toolbar and how will Shop at Home.com save you money? Here’s how it works. The website uses SelectRebates software which is the technology behind the smart toolbar. When you register for an account you are assigned a customer identification number and a cookie is placed on your computer. While shopping online, if you go to a Shop at Home.com store they will redirect you through a ShopAtHome.com link so you receive credit for your purchases and get money in your account. The toolbar alerts you by changing colors to remind you that discounts and coupons are available for your favorite stores. You won’t have to worry about missing a deal by forgetting to check the website first, or by forgetting to enter a coupon code. The cash back rebates are entered into your account fairly quickly and the site is easy to navigate.

Worried they won’t have the shops you like? The website has a large array of stores to choose from and you can choose the option to shop as a guest and browse the website, but you will not receive any cash back for purchases. Registration is free if you do choose to set up an account and any personal information is kept confidential. Check out the site for more information.

Oprah & Paula Begoun List the Best Beauty Products of 2008 November 21, 2008

Choices, choices. With so much out there to choose from, how do you know what are the best products for your money. Part 1 of Oprah’s You: Being Beautiful (titled after the book YOU: Being Beautiful: The Owner’s Manual to Inner and Outer Beauty by Dr. Oz & Dr. Roizen) three part series featured Paula Begoun – a beauty product tester with 25 years experience and author of Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me. She gave us the dish on the best beauty products out there and their price points.

We should all know by now that a higher price doesn’t always mean higher quality, especially when it pertains to beauty products. According to some, it’s all about the ingredients. During the show Dr. Oz listed all the best ingredients that will give us beautiful hair, skin and nails and Paula Begoun showed us which products contain those ingredients at both high end and budget prices. Check out Paula Begoun’s Favorite Beauty Products on Oprah.com for a detailed list and to see the video. And if you want to find out her list for The Best Expensive & Inexpensive Beauty Products of 2008, check out Paula’s website – Cosmetics Cop.com. …or Nintendo Ds or PS3 or XBox  or Elmo, and the list goes on. I found myself in the never-ending search for a Wii last year, hoping to nab one at a decent price, hell – get one at all. Needless to say I failed miserably.

I think the biggest headache for most people when shopping for popular items would be the constant shortage of stock. How often have you checked a website or call a stock to get a “Sorry, we’re out of stock”? I happened upon this website, while once again in search of the Wii. NowInStock.net is a online service that monitors web-stores for when popular products are in stock. Why bother going from website to website only to end up with an inbox full of notification emails a day to late? They keep and eye out for hot products like Elmo Live, Guitar Hero, Rock Band and Wii Fit and track popular stores like Amazon, Target, Kmart and Gamestop. Save yourself some time and check out  NowInStock.net during your holiday shopping.

The Spirit of Giving November 24, 2008

As Thanksgiving draws closer, I can’t help but feel it being smothered by the endless reminders that Christmas is soon thereafter. You barely make a transition out of Halloween before you begin to see Christmas decor and other consumer paraphernalia invading your senses. Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas, but it’s Thanksgiving that really kicks off the season for me, not the holiday sales. The only reminder that Thanksgiving is near is the ABC commercials for A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving – a family tradition. OK that’s enough ranting.

I LOVE the Charlie Brown specials.

In the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday I would like to dedicate a post each day to a charity that invokes the spirit of giving. Tonight I want to start with the Pajama Program. They are a non-profit organization that provides new warm pajamas and books to children in need in the US. Check out this YouTube video with founder Genevieve Piturro as Oprah and her audience surprise her with more than 32,000 pairs of pajamas.

We are all experiencing some financial difficulty. Take some time this holiday season to be thankful for what you do have and find a way to give to those who don’t have as much. Your time is just as generous a gift as your money.

Remember Those Who Are Away From Home November 26, 2008

While we are out hustling and bustling to get everything perfect for the holidays, we must take the time to remember those who are away from home. There are many men and women who are spending their holidays and many other special occasions away from home and Cell Phones for Soldiers are helping our troops talk with family members from abroad.

Cell Phones for Soldiers strive to turn old donated cell phones into millions of prepaid calling cards minutes for U.S. troops stationed overseas. They expect to collect thousands of cell phones each month through a network of more than 3,000 collection sites across the country. The phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.

I am thankful for freedom and the brave men and women who fight for that freedom. While giving thanks around your Thanksgiving table, be sure to remember our troops and say Thank You!

Help Feed The Hungry November 27, 2008

Filed under: Philanthropic — Moxie @ 10:09 am
Tags: , , ,

Today as I prepare dessert for Thanksgiving dinner, I can’t help but think of all the people who aren’t as fortunate to have a hot meal everyday. Today I want to feature two charities that focus on feeding the hungry.

FreeRice.com is the sister site to Poverty.com. Their focus is to provide free education to everyone and to help eliminate world hunger by providing free rice to the hungry. The free education begins with everyone who visits the site. The home page has trivia questions and for every question that you get right 20 grains of rice is donated to those in need around the world through the UN World Food Program. Sharpen your mind and help end hunger with a click.

FeedingAmerica.org (formally know as Second Harvest) is a domestic hunger relief program. The Feeding America network provides food assistance to more than 25 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including children and seniors. They have a network of more than 200 food banks that serve all 50 states. For every $1 donated, Feeding America helps provide 20 pounds of food and grocery products to men, women and children facing hunger in our country.

Have a Happy Turkey Day!

Turn Your Hobbies Into Cash – Photography December 1, 2008

If you haven’t heard, they have finally awaken from denial and declared that we are now in a recession. One which apparently began in September of last year. Job security is a major commodity and unfortunately, not everyone has the luxury of having a “recession proof” job, (if they have one at all) so many have searched for other ways to supplement their income. Hobbies and crafts have become some creative individuals cash cows.

Professional photographers aren’t the only people making money from their pictures. People use stock photography for everything from websites to brochures and are willing to pay. Stock photography sites such as Fotolia, ShutterStock, Dreamstime and iStockphoto allow individuals to search stock images using keywords, sell uploaded stock images or pay for the use of stock photos, illustrations, flash and video.

Dirty Tricks: Double Duty Uses For Alka Seltzer December 4, 2008

I love stuff that has a double duty use. Today I’ll give you some double duty uses for Alka Seltzer. Who know these little tablets could clean your home and sooth that sour tummy all at the same time. I must say, it’s a little disturbing to me that something used for human consumption can do all of the following.

  1. To get rid of baked on grease, drop a tablet and the dish in hot water and let the fizz loosen the grime.
  2. Cleaning the bathroom? Drop a couple of tablets into the toilet, wait 10 minutes and wipe away scum for a clean and shiny finish.
  3. To clean a retainer or dentures, drop the retainer or dentures into some water along with a tablet.
  4. Drop a tablet or two into a vase filled with water to easily clean away dirt and film.
  5. To clean your garbage disposal, drop in a tablet and some vinegar, allow it to sit for about two minutes and then rinse thoroughly with hot water.

Know of some other uses for Alka Seltzer, let me know?

Getting Others Hired Can Get You Paid December 12, 2008

Do you know a lot of job-seekers? Who doesn’t these days? After my first lay-off I found the job hunt easier through referrals rather than answering ads, cold calls and resume posts. I often found myself referring friends and family for positions that weren’t the right fit for me, but was for someone I knew. It wasn’t until a while later that I found out I could have gotten paid for all those referrals.

Websites like Who Do You Know For Dough?, ReferEarns, BohireWiseStepp and  Zyoin get employers connected to prospective employees through referrals from individuals who know qualified candidates. These companies offer rewards ranging from $50 on up to a couple thousand dollars for referring a candidate who gets hired. That’s a nice chunk of change for getting a friend a job.

If you’re really good at networking, know a lot of people looking for work and want to make some cash, try one of these sites out. At the least you could make a few extra bucks and help out some friends or start a referral business and retire early. You make the call.

Back With The Goods December 17, 2008

Hi everyone. Mother Nature seems to be a little confused and can’t quite figure out whether to have it rain or snow with warm  temps or cold winds. Therefore I became confused and couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be sick or well. I opted for sick and have been “out of commission since”. Noe that I’m feeling much  better and able to open the blinds with out cowering from the light, I have plenty of goodies to share. Ok lets get started.

  • This is for the Fashionista’s. I am a member of Ideeli, an exclusive invitation only online shopping community. They have been featured in Oprah’s O Magazine, InStyle and the New York Times. They offer (in their words) privileged access to sought-after products in fashion, home and beauty as well as to luxury lifestyle experiences. I have the lovely privilege to invite a few friends to experience the incredible sales and giveaways. And by incredible, I mean sales as high as 85% on incredible designers such as Trace, Liberty of London and D&G and giveaways from Prada, YSL and more. Click HERE to join for free and start saving on incredible designer goods.
  • Goob over at HIF has a ton of free goodies and a section dedicated to free trade magazines and technical documents. Now there is a catch, you need to fill out a short survey and the publisher will determine f you qualify to receive a free publication.  Don’t forget to stop by the HIF (HeyItsFree.net) to get some great freebies such as a Mary Kay Miracle Set, Yoga Mediation CD download, Parent & Child subscription, Emergen-C, 2009 pocket calendar and much more.
  • All the chocolate lovers out there should stop by a Godiva Chocolate store and sign up for the mailing list to receive vouchers for free chocolates in the mail. If you can’t leave without buying some chocolate, $50 worth will get you a $10 Godiva Rewards Card. Spend $100 and get a $25 card and a $150 wil get you a $40 Rewards Card.
  • Colgate and Reading is Fundamental have teamed up to get kids & parents involved in healthy bedtime routines with their Healthy Bedtime Habits Program. CLICK HERE to sign up for the program and log your child’s healthy habits to receive a power toothbrush for your little one.
  • I’m sure you’ve seen those Red Box DVD machines popping up all over the place like at McDonalds and Walgreens. Get a free movie rental when you visit the Red Box website and sign up for their emails.  Each Monday they will text a code to your cell phone or email you for a free rental. The movie must be returned by 9:00 PM on Tuesday to avoid any fees. Visit the website at RedBox.com for more info and be sure to read the terms and agreements when renting your movie.

Stay tuned, there’s more coming down the pipeline. I’m off to find a Halls.

Holiday Cooking 101 December 19, 2008

cookingThis year my family is hosting Christmas dinner. As someone who has been cooking since she was knee high to a grasshopper, I’m no newcomer to the private areas of a bird. But I have plenty of friends who are attempting their first holiday dinner and could use a little – and in some cases A LOT- of help. So instead of explaining the difference between brown gravy and white gravy, I send them to Rachael, Oprah or Martha.

The holidays can be stressful enough without making it harder with trying to cook a dinner for 12, before learning to boil water. If you’re looking for a complete menu with step by step video directions, complete with grocery list and meal planner checklist, check out Oprah.com for Cristina Ferrare’s Holiday Menu. Choose from instructional videos on entree’s, side dishes and a dessert.

If you’re just looking for a new few recipes, check out RachaelRay.com for some quick and easy meals.

If you need a little more help MarthaStewart.com has cooking school lessons that instruct you on everything from knife skills to preparing a whole chicken. Martha and the host of Everyday Food, Sarah Carey host the ongoing series of cooking lessons to celebrate Martha’s new cookbook, Martha Stewart’s Cooking School: Lessons for the Home Cook.

Just remember that no one is perfect and that a little preparation and patience will get you far. And if all else fails, make it a potluck or order takeout.

I just wanted to wish everyone a belated Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year. I hope 2009 is a happy, healthy and prosperous year for all.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted and unfortunately I can’t tell you the next time I’ll get the chance. As I type this, I can start to feel tears well up, my poor MacBook is dead and I’m praying that I’ll hear good news from the Apple techs soon. This past week and a half has been pretty hard for me. I never knew that I was so attached to my computer. A friend was very generous to lend me a notebook to use for a few days so that I can get a couple posts out. Thanks M, you generosity is greatly appreciated.

A Unbe-weave-ably Easy Way To Make Money January 31, 2009

One of the best things about doing this blog is finding out about all the crazy ways that you can make money. Today is no different. I first heard about these websites on my local news channel and had to tell you.

Hairwork.com and HairTrader.com are hair-traders classifieds websites that allows users to buy, sell and connect with those looking to buy or sell their hair. That’s right, they’re Craigslist for hair. Hairwork.com charges a $20 fee for a 3 month add and HairTrader.com has free listings. HairTrader seems to have a more manageable and organized site, they even list their highest seller at $2600. Wow! $2600 just for getting a hair cut. Now you will obviously need to have long, healthy, and more than likely virgin hair  to make the the big bucks. So if you have long, healthy & beautiful hair and need to make some extra cash these sites are worth a look. Hey, it’s a lot easier than selling a body part.
